Darrell Hutchison, Jr. was born and raised in Indianapolis, not far from the Christamore House. Through his love of basketball, he discovered the Christamore House gymnasium and played many pick-up games while growing up. Upon graduation from Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School in 2015, Darrell once again found himself at the Christamore House, this time as a Frances Carter Coburn Scholar. He entered Earlham College in the fall of 2015 to pursue a degree in Global Management with a concentration in Marketing. Darrell enjoys the diverse campus of Earlham and the broad learning experience it offers. He is the leading scorer for the men’s varsity basketball team, a member of student government, and a convener for Black Men United social club.
Each summer during Darrell’s tenure as a Christamore House Guild scholar, he volunteered at the Christamore House, spending most of his time at the senior center. In fact, it was the ladies at the senior center who taught him how to play dominos! Darrell’s time spent volunteering gave him great insight on the importance of developing a strong community. “Everyone at the Christamore House is so close and genuinely enjoys each other, just like family.” He believes that every individual has a responsibility to help others.
True to his motto, “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today”, Darrell plans to utilize his experience in media and PR marketing in the Indianapolis business community while pursuing a MBA in marketing at the IUPUI Kelley School of Business.
The Christamore House Guild is honored to award Darrell with the 2019 Marge Kroeger Award for his exceptional volunteerism at the Christamore House.
